What is Spider Solitaire 4 Suits?
Spider Solitaire 4 Suits is the traditional, original, and hardest version of the popular game. Like the easier variations, it is played with two standard decks of cards (104 cards total). However, this "expert mode" utilizes all four suits: Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, and Clubs.
Because you are managing four different suits, the board quickly becomes a tangled web of mixed-suit columns. Successfully organizing the board into clean, single-suit sequences requires intense concentration, forward-thinking, and a bit of luck. The win rate for this version is famously low, making every victory a massive achievement!
How to Play: 4-Suit Spider Solitaire Rules
The objective is to clear the board by arranging all the cards into eight complete descending sequences (from King down to Ace). To be cleared from the board, a complete sequence must be entirely of the same suit.
Here are the rules for the expert level:
-
The Setup: 54 cards are dealt into 10 columns. The top card of each column is face-up, while the rest are hidden face-down. The remaining 50 cards sit in the stockpile.
-
Moving Single Cards: You can move any face-up card onto a card that is exactly one rank higher, regardless of the suit or color. For instance, a 5 of Clubs can be placed on a 6 of Hearts, Spades, Diamonds, or Clubs.
-
Moving Sequences (The Hard Part): You can only move a group of cards together if they are in strict descending order and belong to the exact same suit. A sequence of the 9, 8, and 7 of Diamonds can be moved together. If the 8 is a Heart, the sequence is broken, and only the 7 can be moved.
-
Empty Columns: If a column is emptied, you can move any single card or valid, single-suit sequence into that empty space.
-
Dealing New Cards: When you run out of moves, click the stockpile to deal 10 new cards (one onto each column). Note: You cannot deal from the stockpile if any of your 10 columns are completely empty.
Expert Strategies to Win 4 Suit Spider Solitaire
Winning Spider Solitaire 4 Suits is tough, but it is not impossible. Advanced players use these critical strategies to beat the odds:
-
Prioritize Same-Suit Builds Above All: Building in the same suit is vital. Whenever you have the choice between moving a card onto a matching suit or a different suit, always choose the matching suit.
-
Guarding Empty Columns is Crucial: Empty spaces are your most valuable asset. Do not fill them permanently. Use empty columns as a temporary workspace to shift cards around, untangle mixed-suit builds, and reveal hidden face-down cards.
-
Untangle Before You Deal: Before clicking the stockpile to deal new cards, do everything in your power to clean up your columns. Try to consolidate mixed suits into single-suit sequences. Dealing a layer of random cards over a messy board often leads to an instant game over.
-
Extract the Kings: Kings cannot be placed on any other card. If a King is blocking a column, try to move it into an empty space as soon as possible so you can access the cards beneath it.
Why Play the 4 Suit Variation?
If you want a game that demands your full attention, the 4-suit version is for you. While 1-suit and 2-suit variations are great for relaxing, Spider Solitaire 4 Suits is a rigorous mental workout.
